Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Filling
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
For the Lemon Cream Cheese Glaze
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Make the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. Stir in egg, egg yolk, and melted butter until smooth. Gradually mix in flour and salt until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or use a stand mixer with dough hook, until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Filling
  1. While dough rises, combine blueberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and lemon zest in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until thickened and berries soften, about 5 minutes. Let cool completely.
Assemble the Rolls
  1. Punch down risen dough and roll out on a floured surface into a 14x9-inch rectangle. Spread cooled blueberry filling evenly over the dough.
  2. Starting from the long side, roll dough tightly into a log. Cut into 9 equal rolls and place in a greased 9-inch square pan. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes.
Bake
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake rolls for 25-30 minutes, until lightly golden on top and cooked through.
Make the Glaze and Serve
  1. While rolls cool slightly, beat cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Spread glaze generously over warm rolls.

Notes

Substitute fresh blueberries with frozen (no need to thaw) if fresh are unavailable. For a dairy-free version, use plant-based milk and vegan cream cheese. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To make ahead, assemble rolls, refrigerate overnight, then let rise before baking. Avoid overmixing the dough to keep rolls tender. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
